THIS IS UNEVALUATED 'NFORMATIO L4 Kaunas airfield is located on a hill south of Kaunas (54/55174 23/5 E) a rne4:r a bridge over the eriunas (2 a tel.) Rtver and a cable-railway, vrhich starts about 200 meters south of the :ridge and ends about 100 meters from the northern perimeter of the f ield o The circular field had an .. asphalt -road about 5 rioters vrlde around it. I .ro damaged hanl ars, Which were bein salvaged by a building firm, were located' 200 meters vest of the end of the cable-railway. From 2f to 30 one-and two--fanily houses quartering soviet officers and their dependen t,s wer loca .ed on the outer aide of the circular road, east of the end of the cable-railway. The officers and, soldiers observed :,ore brown uniforr:s an epaulets with light-blue borders mounting cros.`ed-,propeller insignia. The field had a firm grass co"/er. 3'd' 2, Cargo**carryyi.nC gliders towed by tswi.n-engine aLrcraft,referred to as Douglas planes,approached the field daily. The .gliders were semi high-wing mono- planes with a slight sweepback, :bride r.ings, tapering towards the rounded- off` tips, the trailinC edges of the wings form a right angle with the fuselage,, The wrings did not have a dihedral. It had a s.L rmple I.,ail assembly not project-:- inc beyond the rear end of t:ie plane., a landing F ear :fixed to the fusela;e, a nose vit.eel and a tail spur, the ?vtheels of the landing gear being not less than 1 meter in diameter. i After being released at an altitude of about 300 meters over the field and circling two or i2iree times, the gliders landed individually at intervals of seven or eight ,minutes. Usually, landing runs did not- exceed 200 meters F. The twin-engine aircraft lanced after the gliders After landing, the gliders ware unloaded and towed from the rear by a tractor. Their car goes were hauled away. They consisted of one cubic motor boxes vLich had to be carried by six r:enn. SIo cranes were available.
