1. Access b,r civilians to the beaches and shore line was limited to an area
of between 200 and 300 meters wide. There were Rumanian guards patrol-
ling the area day and night. Lining the coastline from Sulina to Sfantu
Gheorghe were wooden observation towers. The distance between the towers
was 1,000 meters; telephone lines connected them.. There were coastal
guns mounted on concrete casemates facing toward the sea, on both sides
of the Danube River near Sulina.
2. Most of the shipping activity on the Danube was confined to Soviet,
Rumanian and Hungarian river craft, barges and tugs. These were empty
when going upstream, but loaded with ore and lumber on the down river
trip. It was reported that some were loaded with ammunition and guns.
