During 1949, trudovaks expanded the size of the runway at the Graf Ignatiev airfield. The old concrete .runway was 1,000 meters long and 8 meters wide; it was increased to a new size of 2,000 meters long and 160 meters wide. The project was completed in mid-1949, The old. runway was left intact during the construction period. The enlargement was done by covering the construction area with.a 20-centimeter layer of ballast, rolling the sur?aee, then paving with a 20-centimeter layer of sand-cement concrete. The surface of the runway has drainage grooves at 50-centimeter intervals which i 250-square centimeter squares over the entire runway surface.. In mid-19)#9, there were approximately 35 two-engine single-wing aircraft with two vertical stabilizers (informant believed the planes were Soviet craft), and 10 single-engine double-wing trainers located-at the airfield. 6.
