The -,Rergaka4,emie Freiberg is at present engaged in .laboratory work concerning the possibility of extracting iron from the ashes of NNiederlausitz lignite. Certain kinds of lignite in the Niederlausitz region are known to contain 30 to 33% of iron compounds. The :Freiberg experiments were initiated by the State Planning C:ommisAion and are under the supervision of the Zentralamt fuer Forsehung and Technik (ZAF'T). They are carried out under the direction of Professors 1,isner and. Panmiler of the Bergakademie . The results will deter- mine whether the iron content of Nied,er.lausitz lignite can be exploited on a large enough scale to alleviate the iron shortage of the DDR.
