The major functions of the rear services were to supply units with all such necessary supplies and equipment as ammunition, weapons, equipment, trans- portation, food clothing, pay, etc. In the Hq Co and MG Co of the 46th Gds Mecz Regt the first sergeant issued all such necessary supplies as clothing, gun cleaning equipment, etc. There were no regularly assigned supply clerks to help the first sergeant but he selected some EM to assist him whenever the need arose. There was no supply zne regimenza.L ievei included a major as tie deputy for supply, a captain as the mess officer, a captain as the clothing issue officer, a lieutenant as the POL officer, and a number of EM. Assisting the regimental deputy for supply in the supply of ammunition were one NCO and two privates. The supplies were moved by four 1i -ton Ford trucks which were ormanic to the 46tb ads Manz RAfft The 46th ads Meox Regt had sufficient organic tion for all its ersonne1weapons and equipment. 5 the . 46th Ode Meez Re t had el p eesan about 100 trucks'. there were two new. ZIS-1,51 4-tort trucks and two erman iesel trucks; the rest of the trucks consisted of Dodo 3/4-ton, Ford 14-ton. ZTER and Studebaker -tan trucks The ZId-5 and Studebaker trucks were u,se as pr me movers for mortars and AT guns, The Dodge trucks were used as personnel carriers and the Ford trucks for hauling supplies. The jeeps were for the regimental comstander, the chief of staff, and the CO's of the two rifle battalions, the tank battalion, and the other battalions. The re iment also had some T-34 tanks, type SA-64 armored cars armored cars, motorcycles, 50 and Sp guns. The two Z3-11 -ton trucks and the two German Diesel trucks were used as mobile repair shops. One Studebaker 3-ton truck Was used as a mobile regimental headquarters. One ZIS-5 was used for wire laying purposes. Most of these trucks were on blocks in storage. Motor transport convoys adhered strictly to specific speed regulation tables. All the vehicles of each battalion were formed into individual sections within the regimental con- voy. The regimental CO indicated -the speed at which the convoy was to move, usually at 20-30 kmph. The distance between vehicles was 20-30 m. The staff officer posted five or six men from regimental gq as "regulators" to con- trol the convoy at various orossin s. 12. 13. 14. The same rations were issued summer and winter; the only difference was in the bread issue. On holidays, EM received more meat 16. .The following issue was given to ENI One overcoat for two years Two pairs of breeches - each for eight months Two blouses - each for eight months One summer .hat - for one year One winter hat - for one.year One pair of shoes for eight months. hootwraps.(in lieu of socks) - two winter and two diusmer pairs, to last one year One pair of mittens- for the entire service period one leather belt (worn over blouse).- to last the period of service. One canvas belt strap (for trousers).- to last the period of service Underwear - changed every 10 days at the time of bathing .In addition, the EX were issued: One gas mask One knapsack mess gear and aluminum flask One shovel One pillow One woolen blanket Two sheets One mattress One towel One bar of soap (soap could be obtained about once a month from the first sergeant) Sewing equipment All EN had the same type of uniform which was made of cotton and was to be used for both summer and winter. Officers' uniforms were of better quality than that of the $M; their winter uniform was made of a good quality wool and their summer uniform of a better quality cotton than used in EX uniforms. Austrian and Bulgarian -2.10 :chilling: per cigarettes package of 25 cigarettes Bulgarian candy -2.50 to 3.50 schillings 'a bar 100 envelopes -1 schilling Razors .(Austrian) -4 sohillings Bulgarian cookies and bisquits -prices unknown Uniform collars -two for a Schilling Socks -10 schillings up Shoes, civilian -150 to 350 schillings Towels. -10 to 25 schillings Watches -400 to 800 schillinge Rugs ? -150 to 1000 schillinge Bulgarian and Hungarian canned -prices unknown foods! various woolens, cloth, and dress materials for ale c o h . or* a woman's evening dress sold for 75 sohillings per meter, which is about five times cheaper than in the USSR. Near the vehicle parking areas of the 46th Ode Mecz Regt was a USIA sales store where officers, EX and Soviet , , civilian female personnel could purchase liquor even though the sale of alcoholic drinks to Soviet troops is strictly prohibited by directives. The USIA sales store sold alcohol (spurt) for 28 schillings a bottle and various other liquors for 20 to 40 schillings a bottle. No attention was paid to alphabetical order or ran in paying EX. The men were not required to salute or o through an ceremony other than sign, the n roll.- E::: the monthly pay received by certain NCO's and o cars: egt, 70 sohillingo and 112 rubles; senior Sgt, 112 sohillings and 150 rubles; first sgt, 200 sehillings and an, unknown amount of rubles; re-enlistee (sverkhs- roochnik)n 650 schillings,,and an unknown amount of rubles; lieutenant, 1,200 schillings and 1,200 rubles; colonel, 3,800 sciillings and an unknown amount of rubles. In no case are the rubles paid directly to the individual; instead, they are credited to his account in the USSR.
