THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
The following Soviet and Rumanian troops were seen. along the Danube River
during May - June 19520
1. Turnu Severin Mid-May and Mid-June. No Soviet troops were seen. The
Rumanian troops were quartered in requisitioned private homes at Turnu
Severin and allegedly in barracks outside the city. The following
Rumanian troops were seen:
a. About half had red epaulettes, some with metal insignia like United
States Army Ordnance, some with metal insignia shaped like hand
grenades.
b. Green epaulettes, believed border guards.
c. Black epaulettes with tank-shaped insignia on epaulette or v.shaped
insignia on left arm.
d. Air Porps troops with blue epaulettes and pilots insignia.
e. Blue epaulettes and blue caps, believed Security service troops.
f. Gray uniforms with brown epaulettes, no rifles, believed military
workers (sic).
2. Braila mid-Mayo More Soviet troops were noticed than in April 1952. No
barracks were seen, Rumanians were quartered in private homes.
a. Soviet Air Corps pilots with blue epaulettes, neckties, hammer and
sickle insignia on caps.

b, Soviet officers and few enlisted men with red epaulettes or tank-
shaped insignia on black epaulettes.
c,0 Soviet general with black epaulettes.
d, Rumanian Air Corps pilots with blue epaulettes, neckties and caps
lettered 1"RPR" ,
e, Troops (not specified if Rumanian) wearing red, green, black, and
violet epaulettes.
3. Giurgiu early June:
a, On left side of harbor-to-city road, three companies of Rumanian
troops were parading on the training field. The troops wore red
epaulettes, carried 1892 model rifles, old Soviet rifles, and modern
Soviet machine-pistols,
b. On the right hand side of the road, near a naval camp office (one
story wooden barracks about 25 meters long) naval troops were
practicing semaphore.
c. Soviet soldiers were repairing the telephone line between the harbor
and the city,
d. Soviet troops with black epaulettes and Rumanian troops with green and
black epaulettes,
4. During mid-May at 240 kilometer mark on the left bank of the Danube River
Rumanian pioneer troops were building a pontoon bridge from 40-50 pon-
toons which were first assembled in sections of three pontoons each. The
building of this pontoon bridge was probably for training purposes since
there was no visible road or exit on the opposite bank,
5, A Rumanian seagoing destroyer model M-2.was seen at Galati in late May
1952. There were no signs of naval vessels located at Galati during April
1952,

6, Noted in early June in Ruse were two Bulgarian naval vessels believed. of RRBK'v
series, similar to Soviet-manned vessels in Kuchelau harbor,, Austria,.
7, In Reni, USSR, during late May the following Soviet troop activities were
noted.
a, Soviet troops with green and red epaulettes.
b. About 20 new trucks, like American trucks with smaller wheels and
tires, carrying Soviet troops and supplies.
c. Upstream from Reni at 71 sea-mile mark on the left bank of the Danube
River, the following were noted.. Four 2-storied barracks, about 20
tents, unspecified number of Soviet sailors, two motorboats about 8
meters long and many small rowboats. Reportedly this is a small naval
training camp, .
