1. The only_antibioticbeing manufactured in Cze hoslov_ sia was penicillin. The plant
at Roztoky manufactured penicillin in crystalline form; uutil_early 1952 the crystals
were yeow; since that time they have been white. All the penicillin produced
at Roztoky was regarded as thermolabile and was always kept under refrigeration.
Physicians were allegedly reluctant to use the penicillin produced at Roztoky because
it caused pain at the site of injection. The Roztoky plant was not producing 25X1
streptomycin as late as April 1952 although its manufacture was under investigation
2. In 1941 an opium manufacturing plant was built at Hlohovec L7826N-1748E7 near Trnava;
it obtained its raw materials from poppies. In addition,,six or eight other kinds
of raw materials were prepared and sent to Czech firms for in.eor ( .ration into
pharmaceuticals.

3. The Maizena plant is located at Bolerag8N-173OE :,, a town about 1~ km from Trnava.
It manufactured corn products and IeUt of its output to Roztoky.

5.. The supply and use of antibiotics' was-very strictly controlled.
Antibiotic reserves of penicillin'. strepto cin, ohloromeetin,
and aureo cin 25X1
25X1 were available in Prague in stocks at the State
Health Institute (Statny Zdravotny Ustav - SZU) and at its branch
-institute in Bratislava. A pharmacist, Zuffa (fnu), was in charge
of the antibiotic store at Bratislava.. One doctor in each hospital
was assigned the resp?npibility for distribution of these-drugs; '

a record of patients receiving the drug. and the reasons for the use
of the particular antibiotic in preference to other drugs. This
record was sibmitted monthly'to the responsible doctor, who, in
turn, prepared a report which was forwarded to Zuffa.
