Prior to 11 July 192, a unit of about 350 officers and enlisted men equipped
with 28 x 100 nn AT guns, 1G0 prime movers and 40 trucks and an undeter:ainod
number of units equipped with 30 x 133.mni rocket launchers and 80 trucks were
stationed at the Stendal-Borstel (I 53/Y III,) airfield.

2n On 11 July, an engineer unit arrived far a practic at the east bang.: of the

bank of Um :a~ bo fiver in the afternoon. Engineers provided coverin rifle
fire with blank carts.. dges, The motorboat ~,as launched to take six soldiers to
the opposite bank of the river where tha, took up position and opened fireG
After raa5ntaining tic' bridgehead during the ni ht, the engineers constructed
ferries of h and 6 steel pontoons. about 2.20 by 4,.0 meters, on either side of
the albo Fiver pier during the early hours of 19 July. They also built a ferry
of four light wooa.en pontoons. Four tanks arrived at noon and crossed the
river under covering; fire by the end,? neers. They were reshipped to the east
bank of the river at night when the practice was discontinued. All material
was removed, loaded on trucks and shipped off on 13 July. .
