to f1he Chinese residents of Shanghai are very interested in foreign broadcasts,
particularly those coming from Manila, Radio Taiwan and the British, Broadcasting'
Company in Hong Kong. The Chinese discredit the Chinese Communist news and are
hungry for outside news which they consider truthful., A British resident in
Shanghai tells of several Chinese cooks pooling their funds to buy a radio
which they kept hidden in his kitchen.
20 The Chinese Nationalist leaflr~ts dropped over the southeast coastal provinces are of
little value. This is because most of the people whom they reach are illiterate and
therefore unable to understand the cartoons, However, Radio Taiwan is well liked
and widely listened to in secret.
