PLACE ACQUIRED THIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS INFORMATION AFFECTING THE NATIONAL DEFENSE OF THE UNITED STATES, WITHIN THE MEANING OF TITLE 18, SECTIONS 793 AND 794, OF THE U.S. CODE, AS AMENDED. ITS TRANSMISSION OR REVE- LATION OF ITS CONTENTS TO OR RECEIPT BY AN UNAUTHORIZED PERSON IS AIR 25X1 1. In 1951, work was completed on the construction of a trench which starts two kilometers west of Barutin, circles the village for two kilometers in a north- easterly direction, and ends two kilometers north of the village A second trench, parallel to the first one, is located seven kilometers from Barutin, near D6spat. The trenches are 1.2 meters deep, one meter wide and their sides are reinforced by tree branches.) 2. Two soldiers armed with pistols and rifles are stationed at each post in the trenches located west of Barutin. The soldiers stationed in Barutin were quartered in the house formerly owned-by a certain] who escaped) 4. On 5 September 1952, two second lieutenants, two sergeants, and 20 to 30 soldiers, who are not Border Guards, were stationed in Barutin. Two or three pairs of soldiers patrolled the village and three or four additional pairs of soldiers patrolled the area within a two kilometer radius of the village. These soldiers have orders to check all documents, to arrest anyone on the streets after 9030 P.m., and to shoot on sight anyone found circulating outside the village after'the curfew hour. 5. As of'August 1952, there were approximately 90 soldiers at the Chavdaritsa (N4134 E2)+14) Border Guard poste These troops were armed with rifles and revolvers of an undetermined type.
