1.
The Comitetul Culture Fizica si Sport, whose Bucharest headquarters are in
Strada Vasile Conta, is no longer a central organization for the local sports
associations, but now consists of a series of separate committees for each
branch of athletics. There As now a Fencing Committee, for instance, in
place of the former association, uniting the various local fencing clubs.
The president of the organization is Gh. Vidrascu, and the general secretary
is Marcel Vlaicu. The two vice presidents are Mamie Bodnaras and A. Vaida.
Athletic training is directed by Samuel Barapyi and Baciu is in charge of
the Cadre. Mass sports are directed by Balazs Also, and the director of
foreign relations is Egon Horn. The organization has two Russian advisors.
2. The GMA Gata Pentru Manca si Aparare ("Preparedness for Word and Defense")
is a mass organization for all workers, men and women, from 16 to 60. Its
head office is also in Strada Vasile Conta. PUMA Fi Gata Pentru Mance
si Aparare ("Prepare Yourself for Work and Defense") is for boys and girls
from 12 to 16 years old. OMA and PUMA together have over two and one-half
million members in factories, offices and schools, all of whom are receiving
systematic and disciplined athletic and pare-military training. The two
organizations are supervised by the Comitetul Cultura Fizica si Sport; which
is .under the Ministerial Council. The organization is built up under similar
lines to the CTO in the USSR and the MBK Mankara es Hamra Kesz ("Prepare
for Labor and Defense") in Hungary.
3. Before 1952 there were two grades of proficiency within the organization;
now it is believed that there are three grades. To readh the upper grade,
every member must pass seven tests. The first of these is ideological; others
are designed to encourage speed, suppleness and strength. The obstacle races
included in these tests take in swimming, grenade throwing and the use of the
bayonet. There are norms for achievement in all branches of athletics for
different age groups of men and 'women.
