The Dvina Lighthouse has been replaced by a tugboat with pilots stationed aboard. a new lighthouse ship has been under construction for four ears and. it should be 50X1-HUM completed in another two years. it took six years to build a lighthouse ship in the Soviet Union. The light at Veprevskiy Point (65m35N, 39-52W) has been replaced by an alternating red-and-green blinker which flashes every fifteen seconds. 4. A new li.;~;ht which flashes every five seconds has been installed at approximately 65-4211, li0?14W. 5. Merchant vessele round for Arkhangelsk (64a34N, 40-32E) are required to stop for search at a control point at Chizhovka, fifteen nautical miles seaward of Arkhangelsk. Without exception, foremen and dock workers were required to show their passes everytime they passed the g tird The heavier work was done by men; women were used wherever possible. not one of the three to four hundred stevedores owned a watch. 1 50X1-HUM 9. In Arkhangelsk all of the buildings along the waterfront and most of the structures in the town were constructed of unpainted wood and were in poor condition. A new store building was being, erected and women were doing the facing work. All of the streets were either clay or clay and cobblestones; sidewalks were made of wood. Food stores and a large general store displayed their goods with painted paper figures. The people appeared to be poor; the crowds were mostly women, children, and military personnel. Soldiers always saluted when passing officers. Loudspeakers were installed and used in various parts of Arkhangelsk, and there were many pictures of Lenin and Stalin on the walls of houses. ..'limited number of automobiles was seen.
