1. Combined Russian-Hungarian maneuvers were held in the first half of
September 1952 on the great Hungarian plain between the Danube and the Tisza.
The maneuver area was between Kiskunhalas-Bacsalmas-Baja-Kalocsa. Converging
from the Kecskemet-NagyOros area the forces made an attack from north to south
with strong armored support, including the Russian armored division stationed
there and the Hungarian motorized mechanized division, whose station is

Gyongyos.
2. Rtssian troops worked very closely with the Hungarian units in battle maneuvers.
The maneuver represented a rapid attack on the Yugoslav frontier.
3, Small groups of Czech officers and noncommissioned officers were present as
observers, but no Czech units took part.
Fully equipped. Hungarian Secret Police (AVH) units of battalion strength also took
part. They operated as fieid troops not as military police, as on previous
occasions.
Russian and Hungarian air units operated together.
6. During the month of September units of two Russian divisions, Rumanian troops
in unidentified strength and troops from the Hungarian garrisons east of the
Tisza held maneuvers in the area Szeged-H6dmezZ-Vasilrhe1y-0roshaza-Gyula-Maros
River.
7. The headquarters of a Russian motorized infantry division was in Arad, the
command Of the other Russian division, an armored one, was at 76dme76visgrhe1y.
The Rumanian units accompanied these divisions.

in their first major maneuvers. All were very young men,

10. Rumanian and Mingarian troops were never placed close together.
11. Since the: middle of September there has been heavy Russian military railroad
and road traffic west of the Danube, especially between Budapest and
Szekeafen4rvitr and Szelesfeh4rvgr and Komgrom. After the maneuvers the troops
returned to their winter quarters.
12. Heavy railroad traffic is also reported from Tgrnok in the second half of
September, especially in the direction of Szekesfehirvgr. The trains
consistel mostly of 30 to 32 freight cars and one or two passenger cars. The
latter held Ruaeian soldiera. In the first week of October men were observed
wearing new winter uniforms-. The flat cars carried an especially large number
of trucks and antitank guns, 76.2 mm,.caliber; Armor was rarely seen. The trucks

13. At Sz4kesfeh4rergr railroad station and in the area between Sz4kesfeh4rvir
and Kamarom? Russian trucks ere observed.

14. During; the second half of September a Russian armored company and a motorized
artillery unit were observed several times in movement toward the west in the
area Budapest-Nagatiteny-Ercai. The artillery unit had tele105 mm.hbVitzers,
traCtor-drawn. The equipment seemed quite new and was accompanied by trucks new

15. Hungarian maneuvers, unaccompanied by Russian troops were held in the Pills
mountains. The main area was along the Danube north and South of the village of
Vic. Many tanks, probably from Esztergom, Tata and Budapest were observed. Other
Hungarian Units held maneuvers south and southwest of Lake Balaton, andaincluded
the garrisons of PeCcs, Kaposvgr, NagAanizsa and Zalaegerszeg The northern
garrisons held maneuvers in the area of Miskolc, Szerencs and Sgtoreljadjhely.In
these maneuvers the strictest economy of gasoline and. munitions was observed.
