Superintendent Horan was due to have surgey which could not wait until after the ~nquiry~ a police spokesman said yesterday. ' The inquiry is expected to be a fairly long one. Inspector Tom Pointing~ head of the Queensland Police Crime Intelligence Unit, which collates information on serious and organised crime~ is expected to take hi.s place . Inspector Pointing, 51, married with four children~ has been in charge of the Queensland Police Intelligence Unit for two years. He has been in the Queen.sland Police Force for 30 years--24 years as a detective. The inquiry follws allegations that a senior Sydney officer in the Australian Narcotics Bureau ha,d leaked information from a bureau computer to an interna- tional drug syndicate. ' The inquiry was ordered by the Federal Business and Consumer Affairs Minister (Mr. Fife) following allegations first made in June, 19'j8, in Brisbane by New Zealand couple Doublas and Isobel Wilson. The secre~tazy of the commis- sion, Mr John Cook~ said yesterday that it was hoped the report ~rould be pre- sented to the Government by the Budget session of Parliament to begin August 14. Mr Cook,said Mr Justice Woodward~ Nho headed the Commission~ had made it known to the Premier, Mr Wran~ that more time was needed to complete the re- port~ which could run to 1,000 pages. The Royal Commission, which was set up in August 19'r7, has now been granted four extensions. The last date for its findings to be presented was June 30. Allan Sidney Thomas, 25, fcrklift driver~ of Edgaar Street~ Towradgi~ was charged with supp],ying heroin at Towradgi on June 24. He was also charged with possession and use of heroin between June 22 and 25, and with having in his possession $120, which was reasonably sus- pected of being stolen or otherwise unlawfull,y obta.ined.
