Tashkent FAN WA TURMUSH in Uzbek No 9, 1979 pp 14-15
[Excerpts] The task of increasing the results derived from ;;cientific
r~search and further strengthening the relationship between science and
production was discussed in detail at the annual general meeting of the
Uzbek SSR Academy of Sciences ~xeld or. 22-23 June 1979.
The opening speech of 0. S. Sodiqow, president of the Uzbek Academy of
Sciences and academician, and the report af Q. N. Boymuhamedow, chairman
- of the presidium of the academy and scholar-secretar.y, on the research
conducted in 1978 emphasized the increase in the scope of research carried
out by the scientists of the republic academy of science and the improve-
ment of its quality. The long-range plan for the development of the Uzbek
SSR was considered to be among the most significant tasks assigned at the
end of 1978.
The reports of the participants of the meeting emphasized the fact that
Uzbek researchers had been entrusted with a responsible task--the preliminary
work connected with the large-scale pro~ect of diverting a portion [of the
flow of] the water of Siberian rivers to Central Asia.
0. U. Salimow, secretary of the Central Committee of the Uzbek Communist
Party, spoke at the annual meeting of the scholars of the academy.
M. T. Tursunow, vice-chairman of the Uzbek Council of Ministers, attended
the meeting.
At the meeting of the scholars of the U2bek science staff, academ~cian
O.S. Sodiqow was elected president of the Acadpmy of Sciences of the Uzbek
SSR, S..N. Rijow, S. Q. Sirojiddinow, E. Y. Yusupow and P. Q. Habibullayew
vice presidents of the academy, and I. I. Iskandarow chairman of the
presidium of the academy and scholar-secretary.
