(Unclassified - GLC) LIAISON Accompanied the Director to a meeting with Senators Henry Bellmon (R. , Okla. ) and Edmund Muskie (D. , Maine) on provisions of the Agency budget. (See Memorandum for the Record. ) 5. (Confidential - GLC) LIAISON Called Bill Miller, Staff Director, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and advised him of our session today with Senators Henry Bellmon (R. , Okla. ) and Edmund Muskie (D., Maine) . I also discussed with him events that took place yesterday with. regard to Mr. Sorensen's confirmation hearings. (Internal Use Only - GLC) LIAISON Received a call from. Carolyn$acon, Personal Secretary to Senator John Tower (R., Texas),. She indicated that Max Friedersdorf and Bob Wolthius, former senior officials of the White House Congressional L alson Office, were now working for the Senate Republican Conference and that Senator 'rower would like to have their existing clearances retained. I told. Ms. Bacon. that this raised a rather. novel question that I would have to look into and get back in touch. Following my conversation with Ms. Bacon, I talked with Darrell St. Claire, Assistant Secretary to the Secretary of the Senate, regarding the status of Friedersdorf and Wolthius. He said that both of these men were employees' of the Senate and on the Senate pay-roll and when I discussed the nature of my interest, St. Claire (who has considerable. acquaintance with Agency matters) said he could see no problem in these men retaining their clearances since he was sure other staff people.in these Committees also had security clearances. I also discussed this matter with Robert Gambino, D/OS, who said that unless some action is taken to terminate these clearances, they would. remain in effect. I told him I was considering asking Senator 'rower to send us a formal letter asking that Friedersdorf s and Wolthius' clearances be retained.
