1. Senator Russell held a hearing of the combined CIA
Subcommittees of Senate Armed Services and Senate Appropriations
Committees on 31 July. Present for the Subcommittees were:

2. Senator Saltonstall asked the Director.if he had read the
Alsop article in The Saturday Evening Post and if he agreed with it.
The Director said he had read it and did not agree with it and had

told Mr. Alsop so. Also, the Director said that Mr. McNamara
and Mr. McGeorge Bundy had told Mr. Alsop that it was not an accurate
picture of the situation but that Mr. Alsop had gone ahead on his own
anyway.
