SUBJECT DCI Briefing of the Mahon Defense Subcommittee of
House Appropriations Committee - Thursday,
16 January 1964
1. The Director met with the Mahon Defense Subcommittee of
House Appropriations Committee for the second day's session at one
o'clock which concluded at 3:50 p. m. Accompanying the Director

opened the meeting by doing in effect a simulated
current Intelligence briefing as he would normally conduct it for the
Director at the morning meeting. The Director pointed out that this
was the briefing he got each morning and that In effect similar briefings
were concurrently made for the president and the Secretary of State
and Secretary of Defense. The group seemed most interested and asked
a number of questions about this and the Daily Bulletin.

4. The remainder of the session was devoted to a question and
answer period. There agree two action items which I _j is 25X1
developing; (a) Mahon asked for classified and unclassified figures an
Russian grain consumption; and (b) Mr. Ford asked for cost figures on
Soviet space ernditures.

briefing. Mr. Whitten stated that he was "Impressed with the objective
view of the DC2 and he felt it was the most informative briefing over from
