HASSLE ENDED
STATION WTOP Radio
CBS Network
Washington, DC
NED CALMER: "That hassle between Central Intelligence
Agency Director, Richard Helms, and Democratic Senator J.
William Fulbright was ended today by a personal apology from
Helms for writing a letter praising a newspaper editorial
which had attacked Fulbright.
"The Senator himself had no hard feelings, for, as he
put it....?'
FUZBRIGHHT: "I thought his statement was a very forthright
and honest statement. He acknowledged that he'd made a mistake
in signing this letter, that he explained the circumstances,
which I think are understandable. On the whole I think he did
an excellent job of explaining what -- a mistake which any of
us, of course might make, but because of the sensitive nature
of this agency it aroused more concern than it normally does,
a" course."
CALKER: "Senator Fulbright indicated that no other members
of the Foreign Relations Committee, of which he's the Chairman,
would join Democrat Wayne Morse in demanding the resignation of
Helms from his post as Chief of the intelligence agency."
