(S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: A NEW SOVIET TANK HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AT NOVOGRAD VOLYNSKIY AL 2. 2. (S/D) REMARKS:I I THIS NEW TANK WAS IN THE DIVISIONAL MAINTENANCE AREA WITH SEVEN T-72 SERIES TANKS. THE TANK, PROBABLY UNDERGOING TROOP TESTING, HAS BEEN HERE SINCE AT LEAST . WHILE SIMILAR IN SIZE TO A T-72, IT HAS SEVERAL DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS. (S/D) THE MUST DISTINGUISHING IDENTIFICATION FEATURES OF THIS NEW SOVIET TANK ARE A PROMINENT RAISED REAR DECK, A GRADUAL DOWNWARD SLOPE OF BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR FENDER ARGE, ROUND, RELATIVELY FLAT TURRET.. IMAGERY REVEALED THE TANK TO R~ oFY-1 25X1 25X1 (S/D) AN EQUIPMENT DISPLAY WAS IN THE TANK TRAINING AREA, JUST OUTSIDE THE TANK REGIMENT HOUSED HERE. THE DISPLAY INCLUDED THIS NEW SOVIET TANK, A T-72 SERIES TANK, AND A T-64 SERIES TANK. IN ANOTHER AREA OF THE DISPLAY WERE TWO BMP, THREE T-72 TANKS, ONE T-64 TANK, AND TWO ARV. (S/D) THE IDENTIFIABLE FEATURES OF THIS NEW SOVIET TANK APPEAR TO BE THE SAME AS THOSE OF THE M1981/2 TANK IDENTIFIED FROM A PHOTOGRAPH IN THE RED STAR MAGAZINE DATED 10 SEPTEMBER 1981 (SEE INSET). THE DISPLAY OBSERVEDMAY HAVE BEEN 25X1 PREPARED FOR A VISIT BY HIGH-LEVEL OFFICIALS. A HIP C HELICOPTER WAS ON A HELIPAD NEARBY. WHAT APPEARED TO BE A CARPET EXTENDED FROM THE HELICOPTER. TO THE ROAD LEADING TO THE DISPLAY. A SIMILAR VEHICLE DISPLAY' WAS SEEN REGIMENT AREA 25X1 3. (S) COORDINATES 50-35-32N 027-39-02E.
