IRANIAN OFFENSIVE
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: IRANIAN FORCES HAVE INVADED IRAQ.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: IRANIAN INFANTRY SUPPORTED BY AT LEAST TWO TANK
COMPANIES HAVE CROSSED THE IRAQI BORDER AND HAVE ADVANCED 2 NM
WESTWARD IN THE VICINITY OF 30-42N 047-58E. ADDITIONAL IRANIAN
'FORCES HAVE ALSO ADVANCED AT LEAST 2 NM ALONG A 13 NM FRONT
FROM PREVIOUSLY OCCUPIED POSITIONS AND HAVE TAKEN UP NEW
POSITIONS ON AND JUST WEST OF THE BORDER FROM 30-39N 048-02E TO
30-51N 048-02E. THESE'IRANIAN FORCES ARE ACTIVELY ENGAGING THE
IRAQI DEFENSIVE POSITIONS, BUT HAVE NOT BROKEN THROUGH. AT
LEAST THREE IRAQI ARMORED BATTALIONS ARE IN DIRECT SUPPORT OF
IRAQI FORWARD INFANTRY FORCES OPPOSING THE IRANIAN ADVANCE.
THE BULK OF IRAQI FORCES IN THE AREA APPEAR TO BE ESTABLISHING
A SECOND LINE OF DEFENSE JUST TO THE REAR.
