New Chinese Self-Propelled Howitzer
COMMENT: A new self-propelled (SP) howitzer was identified for the first time on imagery
in Harbin, Shenyang Military Region. This is the first observation in 25X1
China of an SP gun with an enclosed turret. The new Chinese gun is similar in size and
appearance to the Soviet 152mm SP howitzer M1973 with the most significant difference
being in the length of the turret. Unlike the Soviet gun, the Chinese gun does not appear
to have a cupola on the left side of the turret, the engine vents are probably larger and
farther from the right side of the chassis, and a probable driver's hatch is on the left
side of the vehicle forward of the engine vents. Dual equillibrators were discernible on
one of the guns. The new Chinese gun is probably in the 152mm range due to its similar-
ity to the Soviet 152mm gun. Since the Chinese already have a 122mm SP gun, a gun in the
152mm range would be a logical follow-on. -__ I
