Committee for the Defense of the Tenants
We have received from the Committee for the
Defense of the Tenants a manifesto deploring
the "illegal measures" taken by the police on
Sunday against the crowd attending the Tenants'
Committee meeting.
The manifesto then goes on to stigmatize "that
provocation," while adjuring "the mass of
tenants to persist with increased enthusiasm in
defending their right to live."
The Committee ended by stating that it belonged
to no group or party and would continue to hold
meetings to the end.
Yesterday, the Committee received testimonials
of sympathy and fellowship from the majority of
the leaders of parties and organizations.
Quarters' committees were spontaneously formed
throughout the city and sent telegrams to the
authorities supporting the Committee's demands
to defend the Tenants.

Many Persons Attending Tenant's
Meeting Brought to Police Station
For Interrogation and Identification
Responding to a new Committee request, a number of
local tenants held a meeting yesterday morning at
the Headquarters of the Federation of Unions of
Lebanese Workers and Employee a.
At the close of the meeting, a large police force
raided the hall. While some of the police drew up
a written statement against the organizers of the
meeting who had not obtained a permit to hold public
meetings as required by the law, others hustled a
large number of the tenants into cars and brought
them to a police station for interrogation and
identification,
The Tenant's Committee protested vigorously against
this new kind of procedure, by pointing out that
similar meetings have been held for twelve years and
the police never considered them outside the law nor
arrested its followers as though they were common
offenders,
