THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION
1. The commander of the Transcaucasus Front is Army Gen. Antonov. Head-
quarters of the Transcaucasus Front is at the corner of Beriya S uare
25X1 and Rustaveli Street in Tbilisi. the
Transcaucasus Front is composed of two armies.

Front in the Georgian SSR. There are three infantry divisions quartered in Tbilisi:
one in the Arsenal building, one in the Aviabar section and one
in the Navtlug section. One infantry division each is stationed in
Kuta.isi, Batumi. Gori, Akhaltsi.kh (41-38N., 42-59E), and Akhalkalaki
(41-25N, 43-29E).
Vaziani (approximately 20 km S of Tbilisi) and Avcharni (approximately
8 km W of Tbilisi in the direction of Batumi) are sunnier training camps
and assembly areas for the troops of the Transcaucasus Front.
The headquarters of the tank forces in Tbilisi is located in t he Navtlug
section. One of the tank units is stationed in the Saburtali suburb
of Tbilisi and another is stationed. in Navtlug. 77 tanks
is Saburtali and 72 tanks,. lined in in l rows, four a real in Navtlug.
The following other units are stationed in Tbilisi:
Motornech unit (motornekhchast) quartered in barracks on Dzeneladze
Street near Chelyuskintsev Square.
Technical unit quartered on Sapernaya Street, which runs parallel
to Rustaveli Avenue.
Cavalry unit quartered on Klara Tsetkin Street.
Transcaucasus Infantry School located on Plekhanov Avenue.
Artillery unit quartered in the Vortachala section,
Communications school located at No. 22 Kakhetinskaya Street,
Avlabar.
Infantry unit quartered in barracks on Kakhetinskaya Street.

Tvernski section of Gori. An infantry unit
and a anotomech unit stationed east of the
canning factory.
Two battalions designated "Ch F" believed
to be marines of the Black Sea Fleet.
Zasudeli (40 km from: Armored train composed of 24 armored cars and an
Mikha-Tskhakaya) armored locomotive.
One infantry division. The main components of
this division are quartered in the city itself; the
others are stationed in the outskirts. One
battalion of infantry is stationed in the
Makharadze section of Batumi (sic, Nakharadze
is a town 40 km by air NE of Batumi).

Artillery unit located in the Navtlug section; this unit has weapons
of the Katyusha type.
6. All the terrain adjoining the military hospital in Navtlug is part of the
area of the Voyenny Gorodok (military town or permanent camp). A per-
manent military c amp is located in Avchala, a suburb north of Tbilisi.
7, The following troops are stationed elsewhere in the Georgian SSR:
Mtskheta (41-56N, 44-42E): Regiment of engineers.
Kut.aisi :
Artillery regiment. 18 x 75mm
pieces and 24 x 45mm pieces. here are also
infantry and motorized units in Kut4t. aisi.
Khashuri (42-01N, 43-34E): A battalion of infantry is quartered in the
(P,ikhailovo) village of Osiauri (42-O1N, 43-43E), near
Khashuri. Ammunition dumps are located ad-
joining the village. It is believed that the
dumps are guarded by the battalion stationed
in Osiauri.
Stalinir (42-14N, 43-58E): Motorized regiment of technical troops.

Telavi-Shilda: An Air Force base is located approximately 1.5 km north
of the railroad station of Telavi (41-55N, 45-31E).
The base has two airfields, on one of which
40 ti-In-engine aircraft that looked like bombers, rive
U-2s, and one transport aircraft. This field is level but
has no concrete or asphalt runwways. The other, the Shilda
(41-59N 445-42E) airfield, has a grass surface a: no runways;
140 twin-engine aircraft and three U-2s on this
field. The Shilda and Telavi airfields are about 4 km
apart and cover approximately 200 hectares each. Neither
field has a permanent radio s tation. Air-ground communi-
cation is maintained by means of mobile stations mounted
on trucks. Personnel of the airbase are quartered in old
barracks located in the eastern part of Telavi. 't'here is
a heavy concentration of troops in Telavi.
25X1 Vaziani (20 km S of Tbilisi): Central Air Force base. 40
twin-engine, 32 single-engines and several U-2 and transport
planes, and one aircraft unfamiliar to him. The airfield
'has hangars, repair shops, and fuel storage tanks. Fuel
is brought from Gardabani (41-2$N 46'O8E The airfield
has no permanent radio station. (here are two runways,
one asphalted and the other apparently a "Tramped strip
of ground" (sic; packed earth?),
Navtlug (southern section o Tbilisi): Training field with a permanent radio
25X1 station. 115 training aircraft.
Gardabani (41-28N, 46-ORE): Airfield located on the opposite bank of the
Kura River. Work on this field was begun in 1950 and is
still in progress. The field covers approximately 200
25X1 - hectares and has asphalted runways. 24
single-engine aircraft, some of which looked like attack
aircraft.
25X1 Sartichala (41-43N, 45-11E): One airfield. 48 single-
engine aircraft and three U--2s. See sketch on next paged

Veli (40-56N, 45-20E): This field is used for testing ,jet aircraft manu-
factured by Aircraft Plant No. 31 in Tbilisi. The field
is approximately 3 km long and 200 m wide. The number
of aircraft on this field varies with the number being
tested at, the time.

Koda (41-35N, 44- : One airfield, covering approximately 200 hectares.

Stalinir (ex-Tskhinvali-42-14N, 43-58E): Work on the construction of the
field began in 1949. Modern runways arestill under con-

Kutaisi: Headquarters of an air brigade (aviobrigada) is located
on Kirov Street in a two-story building. Two airfields
are located in the environs of Kutaisi; both have repair
shops and hangars. One field is located on the west
side of town, between the Kutaisi-Khoni and the Kutaisi-
Tskhaltug highways. 172 single-engine
ZIS-151 pl,nt is now under construction between the
two airfields.
Mikha-Tskhakaya (ex-Tsenaki-42-17N, 42-02E): One airfield approximately
200 hectares in area with an asphalted runway.
48 single-engine aircraft.
Meria (41-57N, 41-53E): Airfield under construction. Nork on two hangars
has been completed and other hangars are still being built.
The runways were being asphalted at the time of observa-
tion. AAA is located on one side of the field which
covers approximately 500 hectares. 24
single-engine aircraft.
Khoni (Tsulukidze-42-20N, 42-26E): Airfield located in the village of
Ivandidi,3 km from Khoni. The airfield is on the
left sine of the highway leading into Kho:4.

Two airfields are located near the village of Kakhaberi
on the bank of the Chorokh River west of Batumi. One of
these fields is military and the other c'vilian.
48 single-engine aircraft on the military field.

Sukhumi: The area is heavily guarded and approach close enough for
observation is impossible- but on the basis of take-offs
and landings observed, positive of the existence
of a military airfield.

1. The Minister of State Security of the Georgian SSR is Nikolai Makaimovich
Rukhadze.
2, The Minister of Internal Affairs of the Georgian SSR is Karanadze. .
3, MGB and MVD headquarters in Tbilisi are located in what is called the
25X1 Pervy Kvartal (first block) in the section of Tbilisi where other
government buildin7s are located. Buildings of the government of the
25X1 Georgian SSR are located. in the "second block". The building of the
Central Committee of the Communist Party is located in the "third block!".

4,. The NGB representative in Batumi is Kacharov. The chief of MGB troops in
Gori is Col. Kutukhashvili.
5. MVD frontier detachments are located at Novorossiisk, Sukhumi, Batumi, and
Akhaltsikh (41-38N, 42-59E). The commander of the Akhaltsikh detachment is Col,
Popov. Frontier komendaturas subordinate to the Batumi frontier detachment are
located at Adygeni (Tare-41-41N, 42-42E), Tskhaltbila (41-35N, 42-51E),
Aspindza (41-34N, 43-15E), and Bogdanovka (41-15N. 43-35E).
6. In 1947, the Batumi MVD frontier detachment was commanded by Col. Dolidze..
During Dolidze's incumbency, a frontier soldier shot and killed an officer
and escaped to Turkey. As a result of this incident, Dolidze was removed
from his post and transferred to Tbilisi as warden of the Kubersaya
Prison.
7a MVD Col. David Estafovich Peradze (or Paradze) served as commander of
the Khula MVD Frontier Komendatura (Western Abastumani) from 1938 to
1943. From 1943 to 1945 he was deputy commander of the Akhaltsikh MVD
frontier detachment. From 1945 to 25 March 1949 he was commander of
that detachment. At t he end of March 1949 Peradze was ordered to report
to Moscow to attend an officer's refresher course. He completed the
course and at present is awaiting further assignment. Peradze is a
Party member.
