Subject: VP Dienstst?llen in LEIPZIG and SNFTENBERG
LAND SACHSEN
1. Three VP Dienststellen, each with a strength of approx. 1200 men, are
located in the Northern part of LEIPZIG in the following barracks:
i) Georg-Schumann-:trasse (foxmer barracks of the 106 Artillery Regt.)
ii) Viertely eg
iii) 0lbrichtstraase.
One of these units is commanded by 'Wilhelm PIECK' a son-in-law and W bthor
by VP Kommandeur NEUBERT, fnu.
2. About 7 April saw a VP unit of about 120 men marching to7ards
IIELDERITZSCH with 1. light and 4 heavy mortars.

1, The Goertrar Iaserno is situated on the Goermar Landstrasse and consists
of four large barrack blocks. This was formerly occupied by the 7th Bereit-
sohaft but since about 20 April 1951 the 7th and 8th Bereitsohaften have been
amalgamated and are stationed tcith r in the Goormar Kaserne. The 8th
Bereitsehaft was formerly stationed in B Lager in the Stadttivald in iulJEHLHJU ,EN,
The amalgamated Bereitschaft is believed to be equipped with some tanks which
are still parked.. in B Lager.
The members of the Bereitsohaft are allured out once a week; those who
have relatives or close connections with Western Germany are in the process of
being sorted out and discharged. The cfficor in charge of Transport is a Kacnn-
andeur Mans STEFEN, whose family lives in XTMUMSEN,
There are at least two Russians, who wear Volkspolizei uniform attached
to the Bereitsohaft. They are thought to have the rank of Kocimissar.
2, Wendewehr Ka s erne
This is situated in the Uendewehr Str. and consists of one large barrack
building. Before the and of Ap:cil 1951 it had been handed back to the civilian
authorities and was occupied by civilian families; however by 30th April 51 it
had been reoommandeered and is no,: occupied by a Gropn-Kommando of the Volks-
polizel. This has a total strength of 48 - (42 Men and 6 "T men) who all wear
the letter 'G' on their uniform sleeve.

1. Prior to February 1951 only two blocks of the Goermar Kaserne were
occupied by the 7th Bereitschaft of the Vo].kspolizei; The other two main
blocks were occupied by civilian families. The barracks is situated in
the Goermarsehe Strasse. In February the two blocks occupied by civilians
were cleared and since then the 8th Bereitschaft formerly stationed in a
butted camp known as 'B' Lager (in the Strxlwald to the west of the town)
has moved into them.
2. The whole unit is thought now to be called the 8th Bereitschaft.
The Commander of the unit is a certain Oberpolizeirat 'IORTENSTFMN. The
strength of the unit is over 1,000 men. They are equipped with rifles
machine carbines with drum magazines, heavy machine guns, 8 mortars and
it is believed 8 tanks. The unit transport is composed of old German
military lorries, some now Horsch Lorries, and, a few German Military type
Volkswagen. The strength of this transport is not known.
3. Approximately 120 men are soon to leave the barracks every morning
equipped with small arms; these are thought to march out to a training area
some way outside the town. No training has been observed with tanks, al-
though tracked vehicles are heard driving at night.
4. Throe or four houses in the Memel Strasse are occupied by officers
belonging to the Bereitschaft in the Goermar Kaserno.

1. The Baracken-Lager ("B-Lager") in MUEHLIAUSEN is occupied by a
VP unit known until the beginning of 1951 as the "7.Boreitsehaft".
At the beginning of 51 it rooeived a new desigm.tion, details not known.

1. Oii- 1f' the two barracks on the road to ' T . , ',EUSEN, the one
nearer contre of the town (probably the one entered in the List of
Barracks as the Polizei K .serne) is occupied by a Volkspolizoi unit
which is undergoing infan ry training, there
were several thousand men there, although the barracks consisted of
only one very large block. They had only light infantry weapons.

L1 RINGIN
1, Since the beginning of the year a VP officers' school has been
accommodated in the Petorsberg-Kaserne formerly occupied by the 5.VP-
oreitschaft. The pupils, 1000-1200 in number, are men who were
selected for training as officers as the result of the examinations held
in September and October 1950 after the completion of the VP training
year. The barracks consists of 3 3-storey blocks and one large hut.
2. The former Panzer-Kaserne in the Steiger, ERFURT, is being rebuilt
in great haste. Work coumonced on it about 3 months ago. It is intended
as acoammodation to VP units. In the garages at the back of the barracks
there is a Land training school for police dogs, where dogs are trained
by male and female members of the VP for the use of the Grenz-Kri:iunal-
polizei.

situated 1 00 m. from the boundary providing they are in possession of a
special pass issued by the Grope Kozunando responsible for the area.
They must also hand in their identity documents to the Grepo when taking
cattle to the pasture land and colloot some on their return journey.
