FDD Abstract

DEFECT AND REPAIR OF FURNACE AT THE &L;TALLURGICAL COLBINE EASE (1 p; German; 18 Nov 51)
25X1X
This document consists of a typewritten memo, giving the following information on
the Metallurgical Combine East.
In the last report of the Metallurgical Combine East, the opinion was expressed that
the cooled-off charge in furnace Number I would have to be removed by blasting. On the
suggestion of a specialist, who was called from the Maxhuette Plant in Thueringen,
these blastings were avoided. This was accomplished by drilling a new taphole on the
upper level of the blast furnace and letting the upper, still liquid, contents flow out.
In the meanwhile the blowers, which had been damaged, were repaired, and with their aid
pure oxygen was blown into the furnace, thereby producing a very high temperature. In
this manner it was possible to remelt the remainder of the charge. The furnace will beT
in regular operation soon, unless other unforeseen difficulties should occur. The lowest
temperature of the solidified charge was 250 degrees centigrade.
In the course of the reported setbacks, plant manager Ringel (1951 Hero of Labor) had
a nervous breakdown. Zimmer, the head of the steel mill department of the Metallurgical
Combine East, was arrested at the beginning of November. No details on this matter have
become known.
Construction of the large inclined elevator to be used for charging the blast-furnace
has been completed. However, difficulties have arisen in its electrical control system.
