At the beginning of August 1951, the 7~is main plant in Jena employed 12,200 personsd
At present, Zeiss also has production sec ions in Saalfelid, where 1,000 workers are employed,
and Gera, with 800 workers. An extensive enlargement of the main plant is planned. In the
next tiro years a part of the plant is tc ~1A transferred to Weimar, which will probably be a
section intended exclusively for specia3.-~'tnsament production. since this project is being
handled with the greatest secrecy, detailed information is not available at present, The pro-
duction section in ~7aalfeld produces spFC~al?equipment exclusively for armament purposes. It
is said that this section is engaged in t~~e production of instruments for U-boats, speedboats,
and other types of coastal defense vessel;:, as well as ~ornbsights and special equipment for
air-force purposes. All products for mil_taty uses are shipped out of the plant to an un-
known consumer, and do not go through the sales departments of the planto
The Zeiss Plant ir_ Jena is divided i~Eta the following groups: A. Scientific-technical
rou 1} Microscopy. 80 percent of the ~~?od.~.ction is exported, four-fa. the of w i is sent
o t e Eastern Bloc countries. The optica.=~ q~ali.ty and the mechan ical quality, in terms of
labor, of the .products are about equal t~ tha.t, of prewar products, whereas the quality ~in
-terms of material is fair, Substitute matg~rials are used because of the lack of nonferrous
metals, Standard apparatuses are priced f =~orn "f~.l~ to 3,500 Deutsche marks, The value of goods
exported each month varies between 33O,O~~Ft - 50O~OO0 Deutsche marks. 2} Optical measuring
instruments. Products include photometer?~ (PuLrich photometers) Abbesch comparators (measu~~
ing instruments for comparisons of substa~~~s~, and refractometers (analysis instruments-'for
identification of fat content, etc.). 3~ ='rec3.sion-measuring instruments. products include
linear and thickness gauges and optical ~zrfaoe-measuring instruments (for the iron and iron-
working i:ndustry).
B. Photo-Optics group: 1) Production of a;:'..l types of photographic lenses, 2) Projection depart
men ;pro uces ep1 ascopes, diascopes, ~r:~ation~picture projectors (sound film), microfilming
equipment (Dokumentaraufnahmegeraete)", m~_~rofilm readers (E,esegeraete), and other projection
equipment. 3} Optical section; produces ~; +l types of lenses. The zrork of this section is
greatly hindered by the lack of special grass. The Schott Firm in Sena supplies glass for all
optical products. ~) Bphthalmic departmer~~:; produces ocular instruments and refraction measur-
ing devices, 5) Telescopes. Products in^~. ~~de' bin~ulars of all types (from opera glasses to
night telescopes), and are alrn.ost excluai-;el.y exported to the Eastern European countries,
especially the stronger glasses. The se^~.~on is not yet engaged in the production of scissors

There is also a third group which ~rxduces equipment for armament purposes, as mentioned
above, One of the sections in this grou'~ ~rod~-ices drawing-die diamonds.
Presumably, apparatuses with high-t~~-~sion current and high-frequency apparxattuses are
