The document consists of two undated typewritten pages entitled "Rolling
and experimental installation of type 49 S rails." The document concerns it-
self with the problem of the high wear and tear of rails used by the Berlin
intra-urban railroad. Stating that this is not a new problem the document notes
that the war prevented a solution of it bXt that research following 1945 seems to
have met with success in the production of type 49 S rails. Experimental use
of these rails has had success far above expectations. The mild winter did not)
however, permit testing of the rail in low temperature, particularly in respect
to breaking. The Soviet Union has refused to test the rails in Eastern USSR, where
low temperatures prevail Th degree of safety in operation attained by these
rails is pesponsible foxpeccision of the Railroad Directorate Berlin to increase
train speeds in the very near future, after sections with reduced speed will have
been improved by the installation of these rails.
In respect to rolling of the rails, which is done in Riesa and Thale, the
report notes that the rolling pressure ad to be reduced and a particular calibration
of the rolling trains had to be undert ken. While normally 8 rolling passes
suffice these rails require 11 such passes. Riesa and Thale are at present
delivering approximately 9,000 tons of rails per month to the German Reichsbahn.
The Reichsbahn has set very high standards $6r acceptance of these rails in re-
spect to w#ght, calibration and length. Rail profile gauges have been set up
the Plant eor Locomotives and Electrical Products in Hennigsdorf (LEW). Rails
w ich do not measure up to these profile gauges will not be accepted. Rails are
not spot-checked, but rather the entire length of the rail is tested with the
profile gauge. In the last two month the ratio of rejected rails amounted to
21 respectively 23 percent.
