Attention is called to the fact that, while the island has been drawn to proper scale, the buildings have not been sketched in the proper proportions. The following installations are listed by numbers corresponding to those indicated on the sketch' 1) New cable railway for passenger and freight service, 2) Old cable railway for freight and livestock, 3) Motorboat route to the mainland (Kalkwwitz), Ii) Cable car station with loading ramp, 5) Horsebarn and farm buildings, 6) Animal compound with individual stalls for experimental animals, 7) Presidential residence Csic7, 8) Farm buildings and school, 9) Superintendent's residence, 10) Motorboat. docks, 11) Assistantst residence (2-family), 12) Casino, containing music room, dining rooms, two kitchens ,t ping-pong room, guest rooms with baths, and parlors, 13) Ten-room physicians' quarters, 1tj,) Ten-room employees' quarters, 15) Workers' quarters, 16) Workers' quarters, 17) Canteen with motion picture theater and commissary, 18) Workers' quarters, 19) Workers' quarters, 20) Isolation barns, capacity 800 to.l,000 head of cattle, 21) Institute containing slaughterhouse, refrigeration rooms, and refuse-liquefying unit (liquid manure), 22) New institute containing the following: Basement-Installations for the production of viruses and serums, storage and shipping facili- ties; Ground Floor-Chemical laboratory and shower rooms; Second Floor-President's office, secretariat, commercial section, library and auditorium; Third Floor-Laboratories (pathology, histology, microscopy, etc.) and five or six modern experimental laboratories; Attic-Experi- mental animals (small animals, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice) and storage rooms for laboratory equipment, 23) Former institute, at present containing the administration office and cashier's offices telephone switchboard, personnel office, accounting office, drafting office and technical section, 2L) Isolation rooms, 25) Harbor with crane installations for the unloading of supplies, coal and cattle, 26) Shops and machine sheds (carpenter shop, smithy, and all other ordinary shop unit components), 27) Boiler roam, 28) Power plant (2 Diesel assemblies which furnish the island with elebtric power, making it completely independent of the main- land, 29) Former experimental laboratory intended for the development of especially virulent series of tests. At present badly damaged, and dismantled. The building is empty., 30) Water conduits at sea level, supplying the island with drinking water. On the mainland, opposite the island, directly adjacent to the cable railwa and mot rb t y o oa docks, lies the Kalkwitz residential area belonging to the Island of Riems, with its three l ' arge workers quarters, a medical building, and garages for trucks and cars.
