This was seen to be a normal dwelling house, built
about 1870. It was inhabited by at least three German
families

4. The house at No. 21 was surrounded by a wooden fence about
2. 6 m high. It was otherwise unguarded. There were two - 50X1-HUM
floors above ground and one partly below ground, in front:-

At window a on the above diagram, a man and a woman appeared
for a moment. They were wearing white mocks.
6. In the yard there were still builders' materials: the house
had been recently renovated. A mason in the yard said: "Russians
are in the house. It is an Institute for the Combatting of
Colorado Beetles.?
7. At the back of No. 219 there was a shed, two garages and a
newly glazed "studiott, in which could be seen shelves with
laboratory apparatus and opaque glass lighting balls. The
laboratory apparatus apDeared to be in store: small flasks and
test-tubes could be seen.
8. Nowhere on the fence or house was there any name-plate or
other sign.
9. There was no janitor or other official in the house itself.
