Xttached at _'.PP ITDIX "_." is an overlay taken from 1/25000 map showing the main features of the airfield. :fork on the reconstruction of this airfield has practically ceases, and the 500 German workmen from the B-.U TT-ION B:t=TD1TBURG are in the process of being transferred to other projects. The new EST/'TIM T runway ham been prepared raady for the laying of the IBP surface by a special S.`.F Constriction Unit, a detachment of which is already on the airfield. The official Russian designation of this airfield is "Objekt 032". a) The site of the new approximately E.ST/T runway has now veer, fully prepared and. extends between ills 434 706 and 455 793 (irter- secticn of 2 former tracks. See point 1 of _.PPENDIX'l,". The runway has a width of 60 n. (official statistics), and after initial levelling, the excavated strip was flooded and packed by a series of sheeps' foot rollers. Tha new runway passes over the extreme SOUTII::RN anqj of the former rail spur and. extends over the site of two former domestic sites Aituated at ;CRs 441 704 and 439 706. .t the extreme GTSTERN mad, and in places near the centre of the runway, it was necessary to excavate considerable quantities of earth in order to maintain the uniform level of the runway. During November alone, 123,000 m3 of soil were removed. and. used. for building up and levelling other portions of the runway. :.fter final leve.iiz% and. packing had. been effected, a further 10 crq of prepared sand and lire was evenly spread over the entire length of the runway and. again tightly rolled.. .;d.joining each side of the entire length of the runway, a strip 55ms~ in wid.th has been completely levelled and coated. with top soil in preparatLofx for grassing at an early date. ITe drainage facilities have beet prepared at any point along the runway. There are 2 large dumps of IBP located or, the airfield at L s 451 70` and 443 704 (see pints 13 of 2PPflIX 11 - ' - "). :.s yet no attempt has been made at surfacing any pertion of this new runway. b) The former ITORTH-tT55T/tOUTH.-::.,ST runway has been only partially reconditioned and extenitons prepared at both ends, the runway exten- diag between L'fu 445 700 (adjoining former rail spur) and 453 701 (see point 2 of -iPPENDIX ":_"). The immediate portion where the new E.ST/'-.1BT runny crosses over this former runway has been demolished owing to the difference Approved For Release 2008/01/14 : CIA-RDP83-00418R003100170005-3 2. 10 ... in levels between the two runi~,ays. Portions of this former runway have been widenei by ESP giving the runway a width of approximately 55 - 50 metres. It is not '1roan whether this widening has taken place alon? its entire length. Both extensions have been partially covered with ISP. c) The small portion of the former TORTfi T/SOUTH';,:S T runway contained between the two existing runways has been reconditioned. The remainder has been abandoned and is unserviceable through woods breaking up the surface. a) narrow strip approx 15 - 20 m. in width has been prepared extending from the NORTIU PST end of the extension of the NORTIP:79T runway and. extents SOUTHwards to a concrete apron which has been prepared. for enlargement at approx 1211 444 701 to 447 701. These areas have been prepared. similar to the site of the main runway and it would appear that "). FP sheeting is to be laid at a later date. (See point 3 of :.?T'7NDIX it The exact extent of this apron in the SOUTII"i" T corner of the airfield is not known). :_part from minor repairs to the original NW/Si runway, no concreting e) whatsoever has taken place. 5P SflPLI3 The stocks of FSP being assembled on the airfield consist of both new Russian and reconditioned former mcrican Lease Lend material. Both tyres are of an identical pattern and are completely interchangeable. 11 stocks which have so far reached the airfield have been traraportcd by lorry tfter having been despatched direct from Russia - i' is rumoured via S ",'II ET TJ!EIiPE. 4. AIRFI I R.'.IL SPUR There is no rail link on to the airfield, the nearest rail head being at XRLBB('K. The rail spur formerly leading on to the airfield from, the S7I1Ei 5ITrE/US:DOI# line has been completely demolishei in order to facilitate the extension of the two runways (see point 5 of :_PPEELIX "."). The former US1DG^'.~SF;Ll? : U iD? line cannot be used as all rails have been removed, although the ballast bed still remains. There are no indications as yet that this lire is to be re-opens and thus enable the airfield to be served direct by rail, but local railwaymen have referred to the posivi.hle reopening of this section during 1958,when the planned new rail bridge at Is EDC:.4nkould have been completed. There in a heavy concrete road linking the N0 .TT 'T:N perimeter of the airfield to G:.RZ. completely new roadway is to be constructed from the vicinity of the airfield d.omestic site at approx ":i 437 703 to correct the major USE~i:~:HLBECK road in the vicinity of KUTZO`. This now road is to have a length of 22 kin and is is be laid to a depth of l0 cros with a width of 5 m. Initial marking out has already taken place. F. :.IRFITLD INS T__LL:.TIOiB There are three large fully serviceable brick-built hangars a) located in the SOUTH= corner of the airfield at point 4 of APP +-IX It. The sites of two other former hangars are being cleared, but there are no indi.eations that they are about to be reconstructed. 25X1 Approved For Release 2008/01/14 : CIA-RDP83-00418R003100170005-3 i, t) ill former Luftwaffe accommodation buildings remained intact after the war and have been reconditioned, now being occupied by Soviet Naval Air Forne personnel. These buildings are all of the standard 2-storey Luftwaffe barrack block type and there is a total of 10 on the one site at approx I 440 702. No new domestic accommodation has been built, although it was necessary to demolish one small domestic site at MR 43A 701 in order to make way for the new 2/7 runway. ,'later supply is now proving difficult and the well located alongside of the reconditioned purp hours at apprex 444 700 is unable to maintain an adequate supply. Further borings are taking placQ in the vicinity, but so far oven at depths of 40 ms. nothing but chalk in being encountered. d) No new munition depot has been ?onstructed on the airfield, the former installation located near the NORTHT;TST corner of the landing area being reported as being still serviceable. e) No new fuel installations have been built nor have any fuel tanks arrived on the airfield. is far as is known, there is only one serviceable underground fuel storage unit located at approx 123 444 702 (see point 5 of _.ppendix "I"). Throughout the summer when visiting aircraft have been refuellei on the airfield, bowsers have been observed in the immediate vicinity of this installation, and all fuel supplies have reached the airfield by bowser. These bowsers have drawn their fuel either from the railhead at !HLB` CFA or from a supply paint in S WI E TENDE. There are no quays or waterside facilities whatsoever alongside of this airfield. Shortly afterwards at approx (h '~ 545 7"I a small mount was set up and surmounted by an unidentified radar consisting of a mesh parahelloit approx 2 - 24 m. in diameter. This equipment appearei to hunt in the direction of the sea, never having been observes to fully rotate or move up and down. The equipment appears to be remote- controlled and is connected by means of a heavy cable to a brick-built hut- ment measuring apprex 10 m. x G m. locates near the base of the mouni. At eaeit end of this hut there is a single mast approx 5 - 1 m. in height, between which are stretched a series of parallel aerials. This entire site is marred by a detachment of Russian :Army signallers. b) There are no other rani, or radar equipments visible on the airfield. a) There is a total. of approx 1200 Sll_F personnel on the airfield including a recently arrived detachment of approx 250 recruits, in addition there are approx 100 S IF all ranks occupying a separate barrack complexe and a negligeable rjmber of ray 3 igna.ls' personnel. b) .......
