The intense pride among Indians is provincial as well as nationalistic, This has caused agitation for formation of states based on language. One, Andhra, has been approved and there is agitation for three more that I know of. There may be more in areas with which I am less familiar. 2. One is Saurastra which would include the Gujarat States and part of northern Bombay Province. 3? Two groups, whose names I have forgotten, are also promoting a state Malayalam speaking people. This would comprise a section of the Malabar Coast area, exact boundaries unknown. One of the groups is recognized as communist led. 4. There is agitation also for a K4i is state comprised of southern Bombay Province and northern Mal ar. 5. The movement to form such states is a critical one for the central government. It is generally regarded as communist fostered. fer n3 25X1A2g RETURN T I LIBROY Approved For Release 1999/09/1. CIA-RDP83-00423R000301180001-7
