Country: USSR to Subject: Alleged Participation of Soviet Youths in Opposition Activities within the Vilna Komsomol/Publication of the LRS (Laisves Rysiu Sekcija-Link with Freedom) Group. Place Acquired: Date Acquired: Mid April-Early May 53 Date of Info: 1951- Early April 53 Source: 50X1 50X1 1. "Soviet youths, recruited mostly from families of Soviet officials, have been taking part in the secret opposition movement within the ranks of the Komsomol in Vilna. The movement is far from large. But the youngsters have been spreading anti-regime propaganda by word of mouth and by written statement. The mixed composition of these Komsomol groups is illustrated by the Komsomol unit in the Lenin district of Vilna. This unit has 480 members: 260 are Lithuanians; the others are Poles and Soviets, 2. "There has always been open animosity between the Soviets and the Poles and Lithuanians. But on 8 November 51, the first evidence of some youthful collaboration was revealed. The MVD arrested a Soviet youth (fnu) Ivashko, for having helped to distribute leaflets which called for a boycott of the lectures of Prof. (fnu) Larin at the Vilna State University. Larin's lectures discussed Russian cultural in- fluences on foreign countries during the XIV and XV Centuries. 3. "In late 1952 it was discovered that Soviet members of the Komsomol in Vilna *ve been supplying radio batteries to an illegal Lithuanian group which was monitoring foreign broadcasts. This group was called LRS (Laisves Rysiu Sekcija- Link with Freedom Section). It published occasional bulletins in Lithuanian, Polish and Russian covering the main news in the broadcasts. 4. "After Stalin's death some Komsomol members in Vilna issued a bulletin in Russian. The bulletin was written on the inside of envelopes. These were mailed 10 March 53 to a large number of teachers and university professors in the area. It was signed by the Russian Society of Friends of Lithuanian Youth and expressed hope for a - better future now that Stalin was dead. 5. "The LRS group is still Cas of mid-April 537 issuing irregular bulletins, which are written by hand and mimeographed. The bulletins are probably prepared somewhere in the province, but they are mailed to addressees from post offices in Vilna. 6. "An LRS bulletin dated 5 April 53 included comments on the amnesty that had been ll announced in t g ithuanian SSI/iiit#11.91nrgentet; g,t4COgfig,rrest of (fnu) &rumin, i RETURN U io0 IA . e rt et I et la 50X1 mg anai,,Tis. it 'iJI, :; Declassified in in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @50-Yr 2013/07/24: CIA-RDP83-00423R000700170001-5 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/07/24: CIA-RDP83-00423R000700170001-5 ? ? - 2 - a former Deputy Minister of State Security in the USSR, over the attack of the Jew- ish doctors. It sarcastically warned (Thu) Kondakov, Minister of State Security in the Lithuanian SSR, that a similar fate might be in store for him-- he should think about 'choosing freedom' in time. The same bulletin addressed questions to Prime Minister Paleckis and the General Secretary of the Lithuanian CP, (mu) Sneckus, on the situation of those persons deported to Rusgia in 1941 and in 1944-1952. Were (/ those person going to be released under the announced amnesty? 7. ?An LRS bulletin dated 0 April 53 contained various news items monitored from the Voice of America and Radio Liberation. It also gave their comments on the Soviet amnesty, the arrest of Ryumin and the dismissal of Semyon D. Ignatiev from the Central Committee of the Soviet CP. 8. "The bulletins were sent to various railway employees in Vilna and to numerous CP officials- both Soviet and Lithuanian-- including (Thu) Belauskas, Secretary of the Vilna Obkom, and Mme. (fnu) Volchkova, Secretary of the Komsomol. 9. ?The Security authorities have maintained complete silence about the existence of these present bulletins. But widespread investigations, including thorough inter- rogations of railway personnel, are already underway in the Vilna area.? - end - 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release @ 50-Yr 2013/07/24: CIA-RDP83-00423R000700170001-5
