"Tests conducted at the Plankogel. area (Styria province between the villages of Mixnitz and Birkfeld) have revealed that high-grade ore is contained in a number of deposits there. These deposits are, however, spread so far apart that economical operation is not possible. The Plankogel mining project, therefore, will not reach production stage. 2. "Austrian aluminum export reached 11,980 metric tons during the first five months of 1953 as against a total of 15,290 metric tons during the entire year 1952. As compared with 1938, the Austrian aluminum industry achieved an output 833.5% greater than in 1938. "The Styrian Alpine Montan A G has recorded the peak production of ore mining at the Ore Mountain in Styria during June 1953. The total reached 225,660 metric tons or 4,000 tons less than the all-time high monthly production achieved during 1940 (under German management, using mostly forced labor). The Company's other ore mines at Radmer and Huettenberg yielded 15,380 and 16,600 metric tons respectively during June 1953. The production of pig iron reached 39,800 tons during June 1953 (that is 14,000 tons more than the average month of 1937), steel an all-time high of 51,254 metric tons (15,000 tons more, than the monthly average of 1937). 4. "The all.-Austrian production of pig iron amounted during June 1953 to 113,279 metric tons (i y: 104,795 tons); steel reached a production level of 101,769 metric tons as against 96,218 tons during May 1953." i M- RETURN TO CIA t1 A y Approved For Release 1999/09/10 : CIA-RDP83-00423R000901070001-3 ._-p?_?PTY W RMATJON Approved For Release 9919/1.0:: CIA-RDP83-00423R000901070001-3 "The June 1953 production of Austrian ores is officially listed as: Iron ore 257,640 tons Copper ore 13,389 tons Antimony ore 747 tons Graphite 977 tons Magnesite 71.326 tons Lead-zinc ore 10,955 tons Sulphur ore - 0 - Bauxite 1,010 tons Gypsum 26,634 tons Kaolin 16,318 tons Approved For Release 1999/09/10 : CIA-RDP83-00423R000901070001-3
