1. "After World War II,when the provisional Polish government was in the
process of gaining control of the Gdynia American Shipping Lines, they
established a Purchasing Mission in the UK for the shipping industry.
The head of the organization was an opportunist with no shipping
ability. The Purchasing Mis'on was renamed the Shipping Mission in

"In early 1949, it became: evident that the young men like myself were
being given offers as overseas shipping agents for the Coniinunistic
Polish government. I was approached by the head of the Shipping
Mission and asked if I would go to Poland in preparation for a very
lucrative position in Calcutta, India, or Peking, China.
"Now that I see Polish ships taking the Far Eastern route, I can
understand why the long-range offer that was made to me. At the
time, however, I could not understand why UK shipping agents could
not be used in the Far East by the Polish government."
