They show both sides of the single pier at Akyab at the mouth of the Kaladan River. The river is heavily silted and it is impossible to bring ocean going vessels along side the pier because of the silted condition. I believe the Burmese have a suction dredge in meration in.this harbor, but it is not\ery effective. The tide change at this point is approximately seven feet. 2. Photos 3,1I & 5. near the village of Kyaukseik (about 16 miles from Akyab on the Kaladan River. They show the rice paddies and the typical terrain of that area.,, 3. Photo 6. This picture was taken in Mar 514 and shows the water reservoir at Akyab. The waters-as at its lowest level of the year. ,4 4+. Photos 7 & 8. Taken in Oct 53, these indicate the low tide condition of the Kaladan River. at Kyaukseik. The typical method of getting ashore is to slide up the mud bank in a small canoe as is shown. The vessel in photo 7 is a Burmese government river patrol boat.,-- 5. This is the single pier in the village of Rathedaung on the Mayu River. This is an important local village, a rice collecting point. The riverlaat this point has a tide change of five feet. 9. Photo 13. A typical house in the village of Kyaukseik, Mar 54. 10. Photo 14. Taken at Akyab in Mar 54 this shows the typical method of rafting raw bamboo. It is cut down upstream and then floated downstream where it is used for building materials. 11. Photo 15. This is a picture of the Saingdin falls on the Saingdin River which leads into the Mayu River. This falls is approximately 65 miles from the coast. The river is tidal up to the base of the falls. I believe that seven foot draft vessels can go up to the falls.
