"Here in Poland, the Perkins variety of apple is growing in popularity.
Because of its recent introduction to our country, we do not yet
have information as to this variety's characteristics. I would be
extremely grateful if you would send me information about the Perkins
-- tree, fruit,, and correct method of pruning, as it is done in your
country.
3.
"The Perkins is rapidly replacing. the McIntosh variety in popularity,
because the McIntosh is becoming very susceptible to scab and the
premature *dropping"It of the trees. There is a growing need for a
good dwarfing tree. Up to now, to a certain degree, the McIntosh
was used. for mailing stock,,but owing to its susceptibility to frost,
it is seldom used.
+.
",I would like to know if the Wealthy could be used as stock for top-
working such varieties as Jonathan, Starking, Close, Melba and
Cox's Orange Pippin. Of course, I want to get the small, possibly
semi-dwarfing tree, without losing the hardiness.
5?
"Only from literature which I have do I know about semi-dwarfing
stock Anoka; I have had no experience. I would very much like to know
about its compatibility with such varieties as McIntosh, Melba, Macoun,
Bancroft, Jonathan, Starking, Close and Perkins, and the influence
upon the earliness of cropping, size and color of fruit, resistance to
scab and longevity. These varieties will be topworked on every branch
of Anoka but one, which will be left as a control or check (Mentor).
6.
To receive the names and characteristics of other hardy, dwarfing or
ful."
semi-dwarfing, stocks,. I would certainly be grateful."
