"Addressing a. joint session of the Parliament, the President of India anticipated that greater emphasis would be laid on the establishment of the capital goods industry in the Second Five Year Plan (1956-61). It is reported that the government will soon finalize plans for the estab- lishment of plants for the production of aircraft engines, heavy electrical equipment and machinery required by the textile and cement industries. 2. "The Indian Tube Company, sponsored by Tata Iron & Steel Company and Stewarts and Ti d i a n project reports from firms of international repute." the Pharmaceutical Enquiry Committee. a recommendations Of "The government of India has agreed in principle to the setting up of a synthetic oil plant in the country and has decided to obt i oy s, s erecting in Jamshedpur a mill for the manufacture of G I pipes and W I pipes in the common sizes required in India. The plant has a capacity of 80 thousand tons per annum and will commence pro- duction at the end of 1955. An extension of the scheme will enable the plant also to produce tubes. When the entire plant goes into production in 1957, India will become self-sufficient in pipes and tubes. At pre- sent, India depends entirely on imports of these products. "The government of India has set up a Development Council for the scheduled industries engaged in the manufacture and production of pharmaceuticals and drugs.
