Declassified and Approved For Release 2013/08/26 : CIA-RDP83-00584R000300150019-5 'goy CONFIDENTIAL COPY 9 May 1957 ? MEMORANDUM FOR: Assistant Director, Operations ION : Chief, Foreign Broadcast Information Division SUBJECT : Excellent FBID Coverage of Indoneeian DevelopmeLits 1. This office has been impreseed during recent months by FBID's generally excellent coverage of events in Indonesia, particularly in the "outer islands." Each day's coverage almost invariably includes informa- tion not available from other sources. 2. A case in point is the book of 25 April 1957, pages MMM-3 to 7, which carried a Padang broadcast cf a complete address by Lt. Col. Hu2r.ein setting forth conditions for the settlement of differences between the central government and the province of Central Su- matra. This information, an exclusive FBID "scoop", provided the basis for accurate prediction of later developments. The speech is regarded as something of a milestone in current Indonesian developments, and we have repeatedly referred to it in OCI ptblications; HUNTINGTON D.
