L.:) LV UN L. I Approved For Rele se 2 06/01/12: CIA-RDP83-00714RQ4 MEMORANDUM FOR: Deputy Director for Science and Technology VIA: Chief, Planning and Resources Staff, DDS&T FROM: Director, Foreign roadcast Information Service SUBJECT: Media Sources Study 1. I am forwarding four copies (attached) of our media sources study, undertaken in response to the NFIP Guidance for FY 1982. 2. The study estimates the foreign media output worldwide which may be useful now -or in the future to U.S. intelligence, and assesses the adequacy of FBIS' current coverage of foreign media sources. 3. The study concludes: a) that only a minor portion of the total world media output.. not now covered by FBIS can be identified as potentially meeting existing requirements; and b) that FBIS needs a clearer definition of pertinent collection requirements and needs to evaluate the content of the media output seen as poten- tially of value to determine what additional collection it should recommend to Agency management. 4. In view of the recent authorization to proceed in FY 1980 with modernization of the FBIS DAILY REPORT and related operations, we have not included in this study information relating to the applica- tion of "modern electronic data processing technology," as suggested in the NFIP Guidance. Plans for enhancement of the FBIS system are contained in the ADP Summary of the FBIS 1982 Program Plan. The only additional item to report is that the DAILY REPORT Automation Project Staff is developing plans for entering FBIS information into Project SAFE.
