1. SIGNIFICANCE: MISSION TRACK AND SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE
FIRST SCOPE SHIELD MISSION (SU) 013 OF 30 MARCH 1973.
2. LOCATION: SCOPE SHIELD MISSION (SU) 013 PARALLELED THE VIETNAMESE
COAST FROM QUANG TRI PROVINCE SOUTH VIETNAM TO
APPROXIMATELY 18-30N IN NORTH VIETNAM.
THE BEN HAI RIVER CROSSING IS LOCATED ON ROUTE 1A
IN THE VIETNAMESE DMZ AT 17-OON 107-03E.
THE DONG HOI AIRFIELD IS LOCATED
25 NAUTICAL MILES (NM) NORTH OF THE DMZ AT 17-30-38N
106-35-46E.
THE FINGER LAKES AREA OF NORTH VIETNAM IS LOCATED
IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF THE DMZ IN THE VICINITY OF
17-O1N 106-57E.

3. MISSION READOUT: SCOPE SHIELD MISSION (SU) 013

THE FIRST SCOPE SHIELD MISSION WAS FLOWN ON 30 MARCH 1973. IT PROVIDED
OBLIQUE PHOTO COVERAGE OF THE COASTAL AREAS OF QUANG TRI PROVINCE OF
SOUTH VIETNAM, THE VIETNAMESE DMZ, AND THE SOUTHERN PANHANDLE OF NORTH
VIETNAM FROM THE DMZ TO THE VICINITY OF HA TINH (18-30N 105-50E). CAMERAS
WERE OPERATIONAL ON BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH LEGS OF THE MISSION. THE PHOTOG-
RAPIC INTERPRETABILITY WAS SIGNIFICANTLY DEGRADED BY HAZE, OBLIQUITY AND
SCALE. NO NEW INTELLIGENCE WAS OBTAINED FROM THIS MISSION. THE AIRCRAFT
TRACK REMAINED APPROXIMATELY 20 NM FROM THE NORTH VIETNAMESE MAINLAND.
THE MISSION TRACK AND THE CENTER LINE OF THE PHOTO COVERAGE IS SHOWN ON
NPIC N-8282.
BEN HAI RIVER CROSSING

AT LEAST EIGHT VEHICLES WERE OBSERVED ON ROUTE 1A IN THE VICINITY OF THE
BEN HAI RIVER CROSSING IN THE CENTER OF THE DMZ. A PONTOON BRIDGE HAS
BEEN CONSTRUCTED JUST EAST OF THE ORIGINAL DESTROYED BRIDGE. (THE BEN
HAI RIVER MARKS THE TRADITIONAL DIVIDING LINE BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH
VIETNAM AT THIS POINT). NO OTHER ACTIVITY WAS' DISCERNIBLE. THE

THE SINGLE RUNWAY OF THE DONG HOI AIRFIELD WAS OBSERVED. THE OPERATIONAL
STATUS COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. NO AOB WAS DISCERNIBLE. THE RECONNAISSANCE
AIRCRAFT WAS 33.5 NM FROM THE TARGET AREA.
FINGER LAKES AREA
NORTH VIETNAM

NUMEROUS FIELD-DEPLOYED SA-2 SITES HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY IDENTIFIED IN THE
FINGER LAKES AREA OF NORTH VIETNAM. DURING PERIODS OF REDUCED OR LIGHT
BOMBING, THIS AREA HAS BEEN ACTIVE WITH VEHICULAR/EQUIPMENT MOVEMENTS.
SIX AREAS WHERE FIELD-DEPLOYED SA-2 SITES HAVE BEEN LOCATED COULD ONLY
BE IDENTIFIED ON MISSION SU-013. LAUNCH POSITIONS AND CENTRAL GUIDANCE
AREAS OF THE SAM SITES COULD NOT BE INTERPRETED.* NO EQUIPMENT OR
UNUSUAL ACTIVITY WAS DISCERNIBLE. THE RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT WAS 32 NM
FROM THE TARGET AREA.
