SIGNIFICANCE: TWO LARGE HATCH SOVIET CARGO VESSELS, TRADITIONALLY KNOWN TO BE ARMS CARRIERS, WERE OBSERVED AT THE ALEXANDRIA PORT FACILITIES. 2. MISSION READOUT: TWO "MUROM" CLASS CARGO SHIPS, THE MEZHDURECHENSK AND A SISTER SHIP, THE METASTA, WERE OBSERVED AT THE ALEXANDRIA PORT FACILITIES. ONE OF THE TWO SHIPS WAS ALONG SIDE A PIER AND THE SECOND WAS MOORED IN THE OUTER HARBOR. WEATHER CONDITIONS PRECLUDED IDENTIFICATION OF THE BOW LETTERING ON THE TWO SHIPS; HOWEVER, A WHITE STRIPE EXTENDING FROM BOW TO STERN WAS OBSERVED ON THE SHIP MOORED IN THE OUTER HARBOR. NO SUCH STRIPE WAS OBSERVED ON THE SHIP AT THE PIER. NO MILITARY EQUIPMENT COULD BE OBSERVED IN THE VICINITY OF TIIE PORT. THE MEZIIDURECIIENSK IS A "MUROM" CLASS, LARGE HATCH (66 FEET), CARGO VESSEL BUILT AT GDANSK, POLAND IN 1965. SHE IS 508 FEET LONG AND 66 FEET ON THE BEAM. HER GROSS TONNAGE IS RATED AT 10,107 TONS.
