Having been so negative in my previous letter, I would
like to think I could be of a little assistance. However, I first
want to say I am quite sure we have not seen the letter of June
1946, which you wanted for Mr. Luce's biographer.
The Director has shown me your letter of 22 February,
and I was interested in the P. S. concerning the report Allen
Dulles did for President Trum4n. about the North siness.
I assume you mean the history which
was, of course, the surrender negotiations and their conclusion.
I believe all of this has been published, except perhaps the part
about the dog.
I was in Caserta during the time, and as best I can recall
the dog was involved in the first meeting when General Airey
for the British and General Lemnitzer for the United States went
to Switzerland through Annemasse, They were accompanied by
a friend of mine, David Crockett, who now lives in Ipswich,
Massachusetts. I think it was he who told me that to bolster the
informality of their "cover" they bought a dog in Annemasse,
and I think you are right that it was a dachshund. You will recall
that as a result of that meeting Berlin got suspicious and directed
General Wolf not to leave his headquarters, and other arrange-
ments had to be made for subsequent negotiations. I have never
heard what happened to the dog, but perhaps you can enlighten me.
Sincerely,
Lawrence R. Houston
General Counsel
