Morris Draper of State briefed on recent diplomatic contacts with Middle East governments and on the Sharon Plan. It was agreed that CIA, JCS, and State would contribute inputs to a cable mes- sage to Secretary Haig summarizing U.S. measures aimed at preven- ting or containing a crisis. No further meeting of the working group was scheduled-pending review of the- papers. ACTION ASSIGNMENTS CIA was tasked to provide a summary of Soviet motives and possible involvement in a regional crisis. JCS was asked to provide a'U.S. force posture, including assets available to support an evacuation of American citizens and to reinforce .the area. State was assigned to integrate the CIA and JCS papers with a State assessment of diplomatic options in Europe and the Middle East, and to summarize the package in a cable to Secretary Haig by COB February 9.
