SUBJECT: Background Material on MX
Per the 22 October request of SA/DCI, we are forwarding
the following papers for the DCI's review. se papers provide CIA and
Intelligence Community assessments of possible Soviet responses to MX
deployed in Closely Spaced Basing Mode (CSB).
- Memorandum tol on US lead
times for detection o a Soviet response o deployed in
a CSB Mode;
- 12 August 1982 WSSIC memorandum to Major General John B. Marks
discussing technical intelligence issues relative to an
assessment of a CSB concept for MX;
16 September 1982 WSSIC memorandum to Major General John B. Marks
discussing the Soviet developmental time frame for a deep earth
penetration RV combined with accuracy MaRV technology; ^
- 1 July 1982 TRW report discussing various technical issues
which should be considered in formulating attacks against MX
deployed in a CSB configuration.
