Dear Mr. Casey:
Federal support for U.S. research and development of a next
generation "supercomputer" is being advocated by concerned
parties in government and elsewhere in the face of a concerted
effort in this field. Because the Federal government
is a major customer for such computers, and because of their
importance for our technological capabilities, these proposals
are an appropriate topic for review by the Federal Coordinating
Council on Science, Engineering, and Technology (FCCSET).
Therefore, through the FCCSET I am designating a panel to
examine Federal policies affecting supercomputer R&D. Its
initial objectives will be to define Federal government require-
ments for the next generation of very high speed, general .
purpose computers and to coordinate agency acquisition plans.
I would appreciate your designating a policy official with
suitable technical expertise to represent the intelligence
community on this panel. Your delegate should contact my
Assistant Director for General Science, Doug Pewitt, who
will coordinate this activity for me. We plan to schedule
the first meeting before Christmas.
Yours very truly,
G. "A. Keyworth
