MEMORANDUM FCR ALL CABINET MEMBERS
FROM: EDWIN MEESE, _T.II V
SUBJECT: CABINET COUP'CIL ON LEGAL AFFAIRS
At the suggestion of the Attorney General, a Cabinet Council
on Legal Affairs will be created. This Cabinet Council
would review matters pertaining to the interdepartmental
aspects of law enforcement, narcotics control, drug abuse
prevention and treatment, civil rights, immigration and
other matters in which legal issues are paramount.
The Cabinet Council on Legal Affairs will be chaired by the
Attorney General. Serving on the Council: will be the?
secretaries of State, Treasury, Labor, Transportation,
Interior, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban
Development and the Chairman of the Administrative
Conference. Serving in an ex officio capacity will be the
Vice President, the Counsellor to the President, the
Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff and the
Assistant to the President for Policy-Development.
Other departments will be invited to participate as issues
warrant and, as with other Cabinet Councils, any cabinet
member may attend , Cabinet. Council-on Legal.Affairs.meetinas
if the-items-under discussion are of interest.- When the
situation warrants, other individuals---may-be invited to
Participate--such----as the Chairman-o. _the-Un-ited-_States -Civi --
Rights Commission or the Chairman of the Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission.
Any comments you have on this Cabinet Council and the
proposed membership would be appreciated. Please forward
any suggestions you may have to the Office of Cabinet
Affairs by Thursday, January 28, 1982.
