1. This office has been aware of the requirement to
provide enhanced computer support for blind analysts for
some time. Originally, we had hoped that a minicomputer
could be procured and programmed to provide the contraction
function, but this has proven to be impractical. As an
alternative, we plan to modify our CAM communication package
to explicitly support the LED 120 Braille terminal in con-
tracted mode. The CAM package is installed.in our VM system
as well as interim SAFE software.
2. Our current staffing problems in the systems area
have necessitated that the modification to CAM be performed
by contractor personnel. We have recently concluded a con-
tract with for telecommuni-
cations support, including a specific task for contracted
Braille.

3. The contractor has already begun work on this pro-
ject along with support for our new Delta Data 7260 terminal.
In order to minimize the effect on VM and Interim SAFE, we
plan to install both the Braille support and the new Delta
7260 software simultaneously. This activity is currently
scheduled for July of this year.

SUBJECT : Support to OPA's Blind Analyst
1. The Office of Political Analysis is in the process of
developing a plan to improve support to
is a blind analyst in OPA's Latin America Division. The help of ,
OCR, and your Office will be needed to allow us to complete our
planning. I re uest your assistance in furnishing OPA with information
about providing with the option of receiving data from
both the VM and interim SAFE systems in contracted braille (Level II).
The contracted braille option will significantly increase
ability to read data received via her LED 120 Braille terminal. It will
also reduce the quantity of braille paper used by the terminal and the
storage required for filing the printed output.
2. I understand that ODP and OCR have been discussing the
feasibility of providing with the contracted braille
option. I would appreciate learning the current status of your
work on this function, its approximate cost, and whether any target
date has been established for its completion.
