TADS (Technical Analysis and Display System). Analysis of
the results of the recent TADS stress test indicate the reason for
poor TADS performance when there are more than four TADS users on
at once. TADS requires approximately 700 pages of memory in which
to run. At this time, there is an artificial limit on the number
of pages which one user is allowed to have in VM at one time of
300 pages. As long as there is no contention for real memory, the
TADS users may obtain all 700 of the required pages. However,
once there is sufficient demand on the system to force paging,
TADS users immediately are reduced to having only 300 pages
resident, causing intense thrashing of memory as the user attempts
to execute his program. In some cases, as much as 98 percent of a
user's time was spent paging. Since the 300 page limit is an
artificial one introduced to avoid having single users (not TADS)
monopolizing the resources, SPD and Engineering have agreed to
either eliminate the limit or increase it so that TADS users will
not be forced into unnecessary paging. This will be done in mid-
August, at which time the stress test will be rerun to determine
the effect of the change. (U)
