Subject: Prepublication Announcement for FIPS PUB-44, COBOL Coding Form
Within the next few weeks, a new FIPS which provides a standard COBOL
Coding Form (SF-268) will be published as FIPS PUB 44. In addition to
the standard form, this publication also provides an explanation of its
use and physical specifications. Standard form 268 is based upon a
review and analysis of numerous COBOL coding forms being used through-
out the Federal Government. Its development was accomplished through
the cooperative efforts of FIPS Task Group 9 (COBOL) under the auspices
of NBS and the Interagency Reports and Standards Forms Division of the
National Archives.
This standard conforms to the provisions of Federal Standard COBOL
(FIPS 21-1). It is anticipated that significant economic benefits
will be realized by Federal departments and agencies as a result of
the availability of this standard form for government-wide use.
It is imperative that your requisition for copies of FIPS PUB 44 be
submitted to GPO by no later than September 1, 1976 in order for your
organization to take a vantage of the "rider requisition" price and
receive copies directly from GPO as soon as they are printed. Your
printing and binding requisition (GPO Standard Form No. 1) should be
processed immediately. The title, SD Catalog Number, approximate cost,
and Commerce Requisition Number should be listed as follows:
FIPS PUB 44 (C13.52:44) COBOL CODING FORM. Approximate cost
15 cents a copy, Commerce Requisition Number 1586.
Standard Form 268, COBOL Coding Form will be available as a GSA
Federal Supply Stock Item, NSN-7540-01-020-2761 on or about
October 1. These will be issued in units of 50 forms to a pad (50 cents
a pad). To assure early availability of this form for the use of
your programmers, orders for your requirements should be placed
immediately through normal GSA supply distribution facilities.
